The word propolis comes from Greek: pro, meaning at the entrance to, and polis, city. Bees use it to seal and defend the hive, which is exactly what the name describes.
It has attracted a great deal of research attention, and a great deal of overstatement alongside it. This is an attempt at the honest version: what propolis is, what the evidence actually supports, and what remains promising but unproven.
What Propolis Is
Bees collect resin from tree buds, bark and sap flows, chew it with their own enzymes, and mix it with wax. The result lines the hive interior, seals cracks, and creates a near-sterile environment. When a colony is unwell, bees collect more of it.
Broadly, propolis is around half plant resins, roughly 30% wax, with pollen, essential oils and other organic compounds making up the rest. Over 300 compounds have been identified across different propolis types.
The active components are largely polyphenols: flavonoids such as pinocembrin, galangin, chrysin and quercetin, alongside phenolic acids and esters including caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE).
Composition varies enormously by region. Propolis reflects whatever plants the bees had access to, so Brazilian green propolis, European poplar propolis and Southeast Asian stingless bee propolis are chemically distinct products. This matters when reading research: a finding about one type doesn't necessarily transfer to another.

Where the Evidence Is Strongest
Antimicrobial Activity
This is the best-established property. Laboratory studies consistently show propolis inhibiting bacteria, fungi and some viruses. It's why bees use it, and why it has such a long history in wound care.
Our own Trigona propolis has been independently tested and shown to kill 83% of the bacteria assessed.
Antioxidant Activity
Also well established and directly measurable. The flavonoid and phenolic content neutralises free radicals. Trigona propolis in particular has shown notably high antioxidant activity in testing.
Worth keeping in perspective: most whole foods contain antioxidants, and eating well remains the more effective route to them than any single supplement.
Oral Health
Among the better-researched applications. Laboratory work has shown propolis compounds slowing the growth of Streptococcus mutans, the bacterium most associated with dental caries, and interfering with its ability to adhere to tooth surfaces. A substantial body of clinical dental research exists, though results across studies vary.
Sore Throat
Propolis throat sprays are widely used and the mechanism is plausible given the antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory activity. This is one of the more common everyday uses.
Where the Evidence Is Promising but Incomplete
Skin and Wound Healing
Propolis has a long traditional history in wound care, and research supports antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory activity relevant to it. One frequently cited comparison found a propolis skin cream performed comparably to silver sulfadiazine on second-degree burns, with propolis showing greater anti-inflammatory effect.
That's a single study on a specific preparation. It doesn't mean propolis should replace burn treatment. Anything beyond a minor superficial burn needs medical care.
Metabolic Effects
A 2019 meta-analysis examined six studies covering fewer than 400 people with type 2 diabetes and found modest changes: HbA1c down by around half a percentage point, fasting blood glucose reduced. Modest, on small numbers, and not a reason to change diabetes management.
Animal studies have shown reductions in blood sugar and cholesterol, but these have not been replicated at scale in people.
Cold Sores
Preliminary research suggests propolis extracts have activity against herpes simplex virus. Early-stage work.
Digestive Health
Research on propolis and gastrointestinal conditions exists, largely in animals and cell cultures. Interesting, unproven in people.
Where to Be Sceptical
Propolis is marketed for a very long list of conditions. A 2019 systematic review of the human evidence found the great majority of research is cell-based or animal work, with relatively few human trials, and concluded there is genuine promise as an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agent, particularly in cardiometabolic health, rather than established therapeutic effect.
The Cleveland Clinic's assessment is blunter: the science does not currently support most claims made about propolis.
Neither position means propolis is worthless. Both mean the confident lists of cures you'll find online, including in some of our own older writing, run well ahead of the evidence.

Why Stingless Bee Propolis Differs
Apis mellifera uses propolis sparingly, mainly to seal gaps in the nest cavity. Stingless bees build with it: their storage pots are made of cerumen, a wax and propolis mixture, and the material is used structurally throughout the nest.
Two consequences. Stingless colonies are comparatively disease-resistant, and their honey is naturally infused with propolis compounds as it matures, which Apis honey is not.
Trigona propolis specifically has shown antioxidant activity around three times that of Brazilian propolis in comparative testing.
Safety
Propolis is a recognised contact allergen. It appears on standard dermatological patch-test series because sensitisation is not rare, and repeated topical use increases the risk of developing a reaction.
If you have any allergy to bee products, pollen or resins, don't use it. Our propolis naturally contains pollen.
Otherwise: patch test before applying widely, start with small amounts internally, and stop if you react.
Not for infants under 12 months. Speak to your doctor before using propolis if you are pregnant, nursing, taking medication or managing a health condition. Propolis has been noted to interact with some medications.
